Monday goodies: Vultures

Happy Monday! I know the Tea Party debate is on and all, but instead of watching a bunch of black-and-red-clad carrion pickers flocking and fighting over the same scraps again and again ... how about looking at my vulture pictures?

See? Much more graceful.

Happy belated International Vulture Day, and you should totally come to the 20th annual Bye Bye Buzzards Day at Boyce Thompson Arboretum, coming up September 24th.

All new-to-this-blog vulture pics. For more vulturey goodness, check here and here (Day 46).

They get cuter each time I see them. Since we moved we see them flying over our neighborhood every afternoon. We have watched them hunt, play, and fly off in a disgusted huff when I wasn't as impressed as I was when I thought I was watching a falcon.
That's okay. When I saw a falcon, I at first thought I was watching another vulture.

They really are cute, aren't they? Those two flying together were wheeling in and out of each other's paths. It was a blast to watch.

My son was watching a bird the other day and I commented on it being a vulture, to which he responded: "Oh, cool! I thought it was just a hawk."

Fabulous photos! Thanks for letting us see Arizona's vultures in such detail. I must tell my gentleman friend that his birthday is also Bye Bye Buzzard Day in Arizona. He'll be so pleased.

Love these pics! I have been seeing more and more turkey vultures flying overhead lately. We seem to have more of them in the southern part of our state (RI) than the northern part. There are a lot more farms there and fields.

Mary Cartledgehayes: Thanks! Your friend's birthday also coincides with the very first Arizona Insect Festival. It's a good day for animals.

Mary V: Thank you very much. We have a lot of open farmland around here too; it's always a great place to watch them soar.

I was delighted to see a vulture post yesterday! They're all quite lovely. I went to the Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo, NY this Saturday and we watched the Earthquest Birds of Prey show. They had an awesome horned owl and an enormous Andean condor, but they also had a really rad vulture. I used to draw them as a kid, and I always enjoy it now when you post photos or wax rhapsodic about them.

Thanks, Nathaniel. I wish I could draw them. I do quite love waxing rhapsodic about them, so I guess that'll do.

I Love Love Love your birds! best ever! I see you like the turkey vultures. I love them also. I have a group that spends the winter here at my place in Texas. I would like to know if others have these birds and feel they communicate and play with people. Mine follow me on the lawnmower and car! Anyway, I am brendasue of Rainbow Creek. I invite you to see the blogpost I did last night about these birds. I am just a beginner photographer and dream of taking images like you have! Thank You and nice to meet you.
