Check out the rest of my Species a Day writeups here.
In haiku. Something different.
Day 57: Honey bee, Apis mellifera
Tiny bee in car,
You terrify my sister.
The rest of us laugh.
Day 58: Greater roadrunner, Geococcyx californianus
Greater roadrunner
Clenches lizard in death grip.
No Meep, Meep warning.
Day 59: Sonoran bumblebee, Bombus sonorus
Sonoran bumblebee,
It is true, bumbles do bounce.
Off my head. Quit it.
Day 60: Greater bee fly, Bombylius major
Oh, greater bee fly.
What a freaky tongue you have.
Go see my sister.
Day 61: Green mantis, Stagmomantis I'm-not-sure
Praying for live prey,
No wonder you like our home.
Roaches and crickets.
Day 62: Blue-ringed dancer, Argia sedula
Days spent chasing you,
Covered in sweat and debris.
I look quite insane.
Day 63: Canyon wren, Catherpes mexicanus
In mountains and canyons,
Snowy throat, rufous body.
Prodigious whistler.

I can't decide what I like best, the photos or the haiku!! Both great. Thanks for the smiles!
You said you might steal my Friday 5 format, and I'm fine with that - so long as I can steal your haiku idea sometime! Love it.
Barbara: Thanks! I try. Some folks are productive all day; I sit around trying to think up ways to talk about insects and make fun of my sister in strict poetic form. :-)
DFW: You bet! We'll just build off each other. I was already brainstorming Friday 5 ideas I'd use.
The green mantis seems perfectly content with you taking a portrait!
Such a clarity in your pictures: bravo.
Day 57: nice bee, bokeh, and color.
those pics were so vivid and simply stunning.
Loved all of them
Thérèse: Thanks; mantises really make some of the best insect portraiture subjects.
Barry: Thank you! That was one of my favorites too.
Jyoti: Thanks so much; I'm glad you like them!
Beautiful photos, as always, so I'm little embarrassed that the thing that motivated me to comment is that the haiku reminded me that every time I see bees I hear Colleen's voice ("BeeeeeeEEEEEEES?!?!!!").
Nathaniel: Ha; thanks. Don't worry. We mock her in person as often as possible.
Hello. And thank you at once for such an amazing web site. I'll be visiting it on a regular basis.
